Camtasia is a downloadable program. It costs money, but it does have a free trial, for those who are interested in checking it out. It does have some nice editing features, and it has a nice option to use it with PowerPoint presentations.
This tool can be found at: http://www.techsmith.com/camtasia/
Here is a video I made using Camtasia's PowerPoint plug-in:
Screencast-o-matic is a free web-based tool, meaning it does not have to be downloaded. It does not have much in the way of editing options, but it works very nicely as a free product.
You can use this tool at the Screencast-o-matic website.
The screen capture below shows the homepage. Simply click the "Start Recording" button to start making screen capture videos on the web.
The image below shows a comparison between the free version and the version available as a member for $12 per year.
Both Camtasia and Screencast-o-matic can be very useful tools for educators. I have already made some short videos with each of them to use as lessons and tutorials. These tools are definitely worth checking out.
Hi Shawn - Just want to let you know that I don't get an image or your screen cast posting. All that is in these modules is a red X in the upper left-hand corner.
ReplyDeleteI really loved your video! It brought back memories of teaching about producers and consumers. I'm wondering if Screencast-o-matic is the same as Screencast? Lately I've been exposed to Jing which is a free lower-level software like Camtasia but, not as advanced. You can get more file types to save your creations if you upgrade Jing for under $20. Anyway, when you create a video using Jing, you can upload it to Screencast with the idea that no matter where you are, you can have access to your work. You get a Screencast account when you set up your Jing account. Both are through TechSmith. Just curious if they are the same and thought everyone may be interested in this information.
ReplyDeleteGreat video! In response to the comment above, I upgraded my Jing account for $15. You get unlimited storage, which is worth it. The videos load so much faster when you link to them rather than upload.

Thanks for sharing the info about screenomatic. I liked using camtasia but didnt really want to pay for it!
ReplyDeleteVery interesting video. I'm sure we all can find a way to make use of it. Well designed site as well!
ReplyDeleteI've never heard of Screencast-o-matic. I like that it's a free version of software like Camtasia. I wonder if it is Mac friendly??? Although Camtasia said it was, there were still some elements that were difficult to navigate (for me anyways), but maybe that's because of my beginning skill level.
